13 ways to Speed up Windows XP

Here you will get the tips to speed up your Windows 2000:

1. Upgrade File System
a, If your computer's operating system is win 9x and win 2000 dual boot, I suggest FAT32 is used as file system format. Thus hard disk space can be saved and the system resouces can be shared.

b, If you only use Win 2000, it is recommended that the file system format is changed to NTFS. Thus the hard disk space can be saved and the system will run more steadily and faster. Moreover, this file system format is capable to make a correction. However, Dos and Win 9X can't run in this file format. This is why FAT32 should be used to achieve system resources sharing. Moreover, some applications can not run in this file system format, most of them are games under DOS.

Notice: In Win 2000, the method to upgrade the next file format to NTFS is: click "Start - Programs - Accessories," select "Command Prompt", and type "convert drive_letter: / fs: ntfs"in the prompt window, where "drive" is the hard disk partition symbols that you want to upgrade, such as the disk C. It also should be claimed, there is no need to back up the files in the hard drive because the upgrade of system files will not destroy the files.

2. Delete Unneeded File & Applications
a. Remove redundant Windows accessories\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf can be modifies With notepad. Open Find\Replace function, input "\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf" in the Find box, leave "replace" box blank, and select "replace All".
Save and Exit
Run "Add/Remove Programs", "Add/Remove Windows Components" option is added

b. Open the "Folder Options", select "Show all files and folders" in the "View" tab, the two files Autoexec.bat and Config.sys will appear under the root directory of the disk that Win 2000 is installed on. These two files can be deleted because they are empty.

c. Right-click "My Computer", select "Management", select "Services" option under "Services and Applications", all the process components Win 2000 loaded can be seen. Many are about the LAN settings or other features. You can disable the unused programs. For example, If you are not in a LAN, Alertr can be disabled. if you don't send fax, Fax Service can be disabled. If you don't use a printer, Print Spooler can be disabled. If you don't have UPS, Uninterruptible power Supply can be disabled. You can disable some applications according to your needs. There is instructions and operating status for each loading program. If you want to disable a program, right-click it and select "Properties", and then click "Stop", and set "Startup type"as "Manual" or "Disabled ".

d. Turn off the debugger Dr. Watson:
Run drwtsn32, remove all except "dump all thread context". Otherwise, hard drives will ring for a long time and take up a lot of space if there is a system error. If you have previously encountered such a situation, find "user.dmp" and delete it and dozens of megabytes space can be saved. In addition, memory.dmp can be deleted, you can turn off DUMP in BSOD in the "Properties" of "My Computer".

3. Delete Unused Fonts
Win 2000 seems not to be compatible with Arphic fonts. If some new software can't be installed on Win 2000 or there are errors occutting when some programs are running, please delete Arphic fonts.

4. Optimize Disk Index
a, Right click "My Computer", select "Properties", select "Device Manager" tab under "hardware", find your disk in "disk drive". Check its properties, in the "Disk Properties "tab, select " Enable write caching ".

b, In "IDE controller", check the properties of "Primary IDE Channel" and "Secondary IDE Channel", in "Advanced Settings", set "Device Type" as "automatically detect", set "Transfer Mode" as "DMA (if it is available)".

5. Optimize System Settings
Right click "My Computer", select "Properties", select "Advanced", find 'Performance Options' tab, select "Application" under "application response". Thus more resources can be allocated to the foreground process and the system will run faster.

6. Optimize System Boot
a, Right click "My Computer", select "Properties", select "start-up and disaster recovery" under "Advanced". If you only installed Win 2000 singlely, remove "Show operating system list ", and then remove " Write an event to system log "," Send an administrative alert "and" automatically restart "options; and set "Write Debugging Information " as" None ".

b, Remove system, hidden and read-only attribute of boot.ini in disk C root directory. Open with Notepad, locate [operating systems] multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (1) \ WINNT = "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" / fastdetect Change fastdetect into nodetect

c, Type "regedit" in "Start - Run", open "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet001 \ Control", Change SystemStartOptions on the right side to NODETECT

Why you have a slow computer?

Everyone hopes that the computer can immediately access Windows system without having to wait and the system will not become more and more slowly during use. However, it can't be achieved due to various reasons. And the system even crashes only after boot or becomes more and more slowly.

In fact, sometimes the slow Windows start-up is not its own problems, but caused by some equipment or software.

This review will analyze the causes in three major aspects: software, hardware and virus that slow down the system and will provide some solutions.

 Software Causes:
  • Not set virtual memory
  • Not completely remove the program
  • Not upgrade Microsoft system
  • Too many desktop icons will cause      the disaster
  • ADSL leads to slow system startup
  • The fonts affect the speed
  • Too many random startup      programs
  • Active Background
  • Not set the system boot time

  •  Hardware Causes:
  • The hard disk DMA Mode is turned      off automatically
  • CPU and fan are un-functional
  • USB and the scanner's impact
  • Not compress disk
  • The impact of NIC
  • Folders and Printer Sharing
  • Improperly configuration of system      accessories
  • Hardware drivers
  • Too many connected unused      network drives
  • The lack of sufficient memory
  • Lack of hard disk space
  • Too many and wrong hard disk      partition
  •  Virus Causes:
  • Bride Virus
  • A Fulun Virus
  • Sasser

  • Now as you know the reasons why your system becomes slow, so how to make it run faster should be on your priority. This is why we want to discuss below. Please read this three categories (software, hardware and virus) to speed up your PC.

    NO.1 is Software Category

Here you will know how to speed up your PC and boost up system boot time using the tips we provide.

    1. Set Virtual Memory
There is a large data swith file in hard disk which is reserved for virtual memory to store temporarily. Many applications use it frequently. So system needs to access many data for main memory. so the speed to access a file is a very important factor in computer speed. Generally, Windows default is to manage virtual memory by the system, it can adjust according to the requirements. But this will bring about the additional burden on the system so that system runs slowly. In view of this, it is best for the user to define the minimum and maximum virtual memory in avoid frequent change. To set the virtual memory, right click "My Computer", select"Properties", set "virtual memory" in "effectiveness" dialog box which is in the "Advanced" option.

Another way to to free memory when you closed some programs. The Memory Optimizer will be your first choice.

    2. Completely Delete Unwanted Programs
We all know that if you want to remove some programs, we can do that in "Add / Remove Programs", but most of us don't know that that only can help you remove the program, and will not help you remove the program's registration code and a number of registry entries. To completely remove the program, professional software should be used. Weskysoft's Perfect Optimizer can be a very good choice. It can accomplich this task successfully.

    3. Check Applications and Driver
Some programs slow down computer startup. If so, we can start computer in "Safe Mode"because this is the original startup, computer runs slower in safe mode than other modes. However, if the computer runs faster in safe mode than normal conditions, it proves that some program caused the system slowness.

    4. Too many Icons on the Desktop
That there are too many icons on the desktop will also reduce system start-up speed. Windows needs to check the shortcut icons on the desktop one by one and loads them with every start. The more icons there are, the more time it takes. At the same time, some anti-virus software provides the system starts scanning feature, which will cost a lot of time. In fact, if you have opened the real-time monitoring feature of antivirus software, it is a bit redundant about start scanning. It is best to disable this feature. It is recommended that you save the icons that are not used frequently in a folder or delete them completely.

    5. ADSL causes Slow System Boot
By default, Windows XP would be self-peer networking equipment such as NIC at boot. If the IP address of network card is not configured, it will set them, which may be the real cause that lead to system slowness. At this time we can open the "Local Area Connection" Properties menu, double-click "Internet Protocol" in "General"option. Open "TCP/IP Properties" menu, set the IP address of the NIC to an unused value such as 192.168.1.X, X in a public network (the default gateway is 192.168.1.1).

X is set between a value between 2 to 255, set the sub-net mask to 255.255.255.0, default gateway and DNS can be default settings.

    6. Fonts lower System Speed
Although Microsoft claims that 1000--1500 kinds of fonts can be installed on Windows operating system, actually there will be problems when more than 500 kinds of fonts are installed. For example, the font disappears from the application's font list as well as the Windows boot-up time dropped significantly. It would be preferable to delete the fonts that are not used. Backup can be made in avoid of deleting by accident.

    7. Disable Applications that Starts with System Boot
What is random startup programs? It is the programs that are loaded at system boot. Random startup programs not only slow down the boot, but also consum computer resources and memory. In general, if you want to remove the random startup programs, they can be deleted from "Start" list. However, some programs such as msn, shouldn't be deleted from start list.

You can access "subsidiary application", and then go to "System Tools", go to"System Information", click "tool" on the top, then click" System Configuration Editor", in the" Startup "dialog box, the random programs are listed in details. For XP, you can type "Msconfig" in "run" to open "System Configuration Utility"to terminate system random start programs. For Windows 2000,it needs to copy the msconfig program from XP.

As we discussed before, using ActivePcOptimizer Startup Manager will be the fastest way to disable unused system startup applications. ActivePcOptimizer is designed for both professionals and newbie.

    8. Disable Background & ActiveDesktop
Most users may not know that the beautiful desktop background occupy a lot of system resources. Moreover, it slows down computer. We meant to beautify the desktop. Instead, it slows down your computer. The background can be cancelled in order to keep your computer running fast.

The method is: right-click on the desktop, then click "content", and then in the "background" dialog box, select "No". In the "Appearance" dialog box, change the default desktop blue green to black.

As for the closure of activedesktop, that is to turn off the web on the desktop. For example, right click on the desktop and select "content". There is a background called Windows XP in the "background" dialog box. That is the web. Therefore, don't turn on it if the system configuration is not high.

    9. Tune up Windows
Compared with DOS system, Windows is too large and it is becoming larger and larger along with your daily operations, such as installation of new software, load the runtime database, add new games and so on. More importantly, not only its directory, as well as its registry and run database will become larger and larger. It is because DLL file still exists even the program is deleted. Thus Windows startup and exit needs to load more and more DLL dynamic-link library files which lead to computer slowness.

It is best to find some software that can completely remove the DLL. It is very effective to reinstall the operating system every two months.

    10. Change System Startup Time
Although you already know how to add or delete some random startup programs, do you know what the computer does or what programs are running during the time between boot and accessing to Windows? All the programs must be loaded and then it can access to windows. Have you thought about that it will speed up your computer startup if some unnecessary programs are deleted? The answer is yes. If you want to modify, click"Start", select "executive", and then type "win.ini", open it and then delete all the content of each paragraph, but do not delete the titles, including: [compatibility], [compatibility32], [imecompatibility], [compatibility95], [modulecompatibility] and [embedding].

    NO.2 is Hardware Category

    1. Disable HD DMA Mode
As we all know the hard drive DMA mode and the hard drive PATA mode includes DMA33, DMA66, DMA100 and DMA133, the latest is SATA-150. Generally, most people are using PATA hard drive. DMA mode transmission rate is 2 to 8 times as fast as the previous PIO mode. The use of DMA Mode has played a substantial role in improving the system performance. However, Windows 2000, XP, 2003 systems sometimes turn off DMA mode of the hard drive and switch to PIO mode automatically.

As a result, the hard drive performance suddenly dropped. The most obvious phenomenon: the system startup significantly slow. The system runs slowly or even stops when there is some operations on the hard disk or some large software is running which occupy 100% CPU. When the the problems above happen, you had better chenck whether the DMA mode is shut down.

  • a. Double-click "Administrative Tools", then double-click "Computer Management";
  • b. Click "System Tools" and then click "Device Manager";
  • c. Expand "IDE ATA / ATAPI Controllers" node;
  • d. Double-click your "primary IDE Controller";
  • e. Click "Advanced Settings"

  • Find "device 0",set the following transfer mode to DMA. If it is available, close the mode.

    2. Check CPU and Fan
When the CPU fan runs slowly, the temperature of CPU will rise. In order to protect CPU, it will automatically reduce the operating frequency which results in the computer running slowly.

There are two ways to detect CPU temperature. You can use the "finger test method". Check the processor temperature is hot or not with a finger. But you must first unplug the power plug and take a grounding wire to prevent electrostatic on your body from breaking CPU. Another relatively scientific method is to detect the processore tempreture with a multimeter with a temperature-sensitive device. The reasonable temperature varies because of the different types and models of processor. But in general, the temperature should be lower than 110 degrees. If you find that the processor tempreture is higher than this, check the fan in the chassis is running normally or not.

    3. USB and Scanner
Windows detects every drive (including CD-ROM) during startup. The computer startup time will be extended if a CD-ROM is placed in disk drive. If scanners or other equipment are installed or the computer has been connected to the USB disk when it starts up. Try to disconnect them first to see whether startup will be sped up or not. Generally speaking, USB port is slow, so the corressponding devices will slow down computer significantly. we should try to connect USB devices after startup. If there is no USB equipment, it is recommended that you turn off USB feature directly in the BIOS settings.

    4. Disk Defrag
The disk compression may cause a sharp decline in PC performance and results in slow system speed. You should check if "disk compression" is used or not.
The detailed operation is: right click "My Computer", select "Properties" from the pop-up menu to check the drive's properties.
The disk compression feature of Perfect Optimizer is simple and easy to use.And it will not affect the overall performance of the computer.

    5. Netcard
Improper settings of network card significantly affect the system boot speed. If your computer is connected to the LAN, the system will automatically obtain IP address throgh DHCP by default after network card and driver are installed. But there is no DHCP server in most company's local area network. So if the user set "Automatically Obtain IP address", the system will search DHCP server in the network till IP address is obtained or timeout which certainly affect startup speed. It is best fot LAN users to set their computers to a fixed IP address.

    6. File Share and Printer Share
The computer installed Windows XP Professional Edition starts very slowly sometimes. It seems freezing after logging in system becase it responses some time later. This is due to the use of Bootvis.exe program, of which Mrxsmb.dll document add 67 seconds to computer startup.

This problem can be solved by stopping sharing folders and printers: Select "Start 鈫?Settings 鈫?Network and Dial-up Connections", right-click "Local Area Connection", choose "Properties", in the open window, cancel "Microsoft Networks File and Printer Sharing " which is under" This connection uses the following selected components and then restart the computer.

    7. False System Settings
Some small things are often overlooked in assembling machine, which results in improperty of the overall accessories. Thus computer speed is affected obviously. For example, some friends selecte high grade CPU, but common sound card. Thus sound stops or the programs run on and off when the game is running or DVD is played because the sound card will occupy much CPU resources and data transfer speed becomes slower, or their is absolutely no hardware decoder and software decoder method must be used. Another example, some friends update their machines, but some components on the old computer such as memory are used on the new computer. Due to the limit of the old memory, the new computer has to reduce speed to accommodate it and overall system performance will be greatly affected.

    8. Disconnect Unused Net Drives
In order to eliminate or reduce the number of network connections that Windows re-establishes, it is proposed to disconnect the network drives that are not used. Click"My Computer, right-click network drive that has established map, select "Disconnect" option.

    9. Low Memory
One of the Windows operating system advantages is the multi-linear, multi-task. The system can carry out time-sharing operation with CPU so that you can do a lot of things at the same time. However, the sword has double edges. Higher requirements are needed for multi-mission operation. Most of us know that it is best there is 16MB memory for most commonly used WORD software. While 64MB memory is not enough when some large software, such as 3D MAX software. At this time the system will automatically use the hard disk space to the virtual main memory for running programs and store exchange documents and all kinds of temporary files. Because hard drives are mechanical structure, while the memory is electronic structure, they are totally different in speed. Therefore using the hard disk to virtualize main memory will result in a significant reduction in speed.

    10. Hard Disk Space
One of the Windows platform shortcomings is that it is not clear for the document management. Sometimes you do not know it is usefull or not for the system. Thus the number of documents under Windows directory becomes larger and larger, the capacity is also growing. What's more, temporary files, swap files that system generate accumulat. All these lead to few free hard disk space. When the hard disk free space minimize to a certain extent, there will not be enough space for the system swap files and temporary files. The system's operating efficiency will be affected. More important is that we usually store, delete many software from the hard disk frequently, which makes the hard disk free space becomes fragmented, so the files are not stored in a continuous order, which would cause the system to store and read files by moving head frequently. The system speed is greatly influenced.

    11. Too many Disk Partition
If your Windows 2000 is not upgraded to SP3 or SP4, and is defined too many partitions, which also lead to slow startup. It is proposed that you upgarde your computer to the latest SP4. It is better that there are not too many sub-districts of the drive. Because Windows must load each partition at boot. It will take more time with the increase in the number of partitions.

    NO.3 is Virus Category

If your computer is infected with a virus, then the system speed will be substantially slower. Viruses will first occupy the memory and then it will copy itself endlessly then more and more system memory is occupied, which causes that the normal programs run slowly or even can't startup because they are in lack of main memory. At the same time, the virus program will force CPU to implement the useless programs, which keeps the system busy, thus the normal program operation is affected, resulting in computer slows down. Here we will introduce several viruses which can slow down the system.

    1. Virus Bride
    Virus Type: Hacker Programs
    Attack Time: Random
    Mode of Transmission: Network
    Infected Objects: Network

This virus can run in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and other operating systems. It will automatically connect Hotmail website during running. If this site can't be linked, the virus will be dormant a few minutes, and then modify the registry to add itself to the automatic launch item list of the registry. The virus will release four virus bodies and a flawed drug email and send emails through the mail system. The virus will release FUNLOVE to infecte local area network computers. Finally, the virus will kill dozens of anti-virus software to make them ineffective.

    Features of the virus infection:
If you find the computer has these characteristics, it is likely your computer is infected by this virus.

    * After running, the virus will automatically connect the Hotmail website.
    * Viruses will release three files Bride.exe, Msconfig.exe, Regedit.exe to the system directory; and release Help.eml, Explorer.exe file to the desktop.
    * The virus will add the path of virus Regedit.exe to the registry item HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
    * The virus will release another virus FUNLOVE and implement it. The virus FUNLOVE will increase constantly which causes the system slowness and network congestion.
    * The virus will look for e-mail addresses in the computer, and then send out a large number of virus emails headings as follows: "The computer name that has been infected." (For example: If the user's computer name is Mike Family, then the virus e-mail entitled: Mike Family.)
    * Virus also will kill dozens of well-known anti-virus software.

If the user find all or part of the phenomena above, it is probably that your computer is infected by the virus Bride(Worm.bride). Please kill the virus with the anti-virus software.

    2. Worm.Avron
    Virus Type: Worm

    * Virus will kill a number of anti-virus software which are running
    * The virus will modify the registry self-starting items to launch itself
    * The virus will spread in the local area network by the establishment of four threads

If you find all or part of the phenomena above on your computer, it is likely it is infected by "A Fulun (Worm.Avron)". It is best to kill it with anti-virus software because there is not a fixed file name for the virus.

    3. Worm.Sasser
    Virus Name: Worm.Sasser
    Virus Alias: W32/Sasser.worm [Mcafee]
    Virus Type: Worm
The system that can be infected: WinNT/Win2000/WinXP/Win2003/WinVista/Win7

    Virus infection symptoms:
    * The computer crashes or restarts inexplicably;
    * System is very slow, cpu is occupied 100%;
    * Slow Network;
    * The most important is that there is a process called "avserve.exe" running in the Task Manager.

    The way to infect computers:
    * The virus spreads widely by Lsass vulnerability in WINDOWS platforms, opens hundreds of threads to attack on other systems, clogs network. The virus attack can make the system restart constantly.
    * Different from other worm viruses, this virus does not spread through e-mail, but by commonding vulnerable machines to download a specific file and run to achieve infection.
    * File name: avserve.exe

    Solution:
    * Please visit the anti-virus websites to download patch to upgrade your operating system and protect your computer from being attacked

    Close Registry Editor.

8 ways to Speed Up Windows Vista

    1. Upgrade Hard Driver
Some graphics chips need to be upgraded such as Graphics Cards, Motherboards, and so on because some in Vista do not support the Aero theme. They will do after upgrading Motherboard Graphics Chips. Therefore,it will be much helpful to check whether there are updates for the hard drives.

    2. Disable some Windows Applications
Open Control Panel, select Uninstall program, click turned on or off Windows features on the left list, disable the unnecessary options, there are some explanation about the functions with the mouse moving on the option.

    3. Disable some System Services
Enter 'services.msc' in the Start menu to open the list of services, for each service, you can right click it and select the property, the startup type can be set to run automatically, manually or disabled. We recommend that you turn off the following services:

  • Computer Browser
  • Distributed Link Tracking Client
  • IKE and AuthIP IP Keying Modules
  • Offline Files
  • Remote Registry
  • Tablet PC Input Service (unless you鈥檙e using a tablet PC)
  • Windows Error Reporting
  • 4. Disable auto-run Applications
Type "msconfig" in the start menu, select Enable, which is the list of programs which run automatically with the computer startup. I only Click Windows Defender and sound card program (It is only two-channel for 4.1 sound card if it is disabled. It is a bug of the driver.) Of course, anti-virus software is indefeasible.

If you want to make thing easier, please use ActivePcOptimizer Startup Manager to disable auto-run applications to speed up your Windows Vista.

    5. Disable System Tray Service
In addition to random start programs, some other programs also add their icon to the System Tray, but most of the icons are little useful, such as the network connection icon which can be removed in the previous step. Also you can right click it and set in the options that the program doesn't automatically run or load.

    6. Speed up Windows Aero Service
Vista Ad WOW is to show off how gorgeous it is, but the cost lies in the high configuration and high system consumption. It will become faster to turn it off. Right click to select Personalization, in the Windows Color and Appearance, untick "Enable transparency effects", or simply replace Aero for Vista basic or standard. Shut down sidebar because it is useless. Right click and select "Computer", select "Properties", click "Advanced System Settings"on the left, "Advanced", "Settings", "Visual Effects",turn off as many as possible.

7 ways to Speed up Windows 7

It is really a piece of exciting news for computer users that Windows 7 operating system can be widely used. Compaired with Vista, the interface of Windows 7 is more beautiful, and it runs faster and smoother. However, are you anxious about that it is the same with other Windows operating systems which only run fast short after installation and become more and more slower with time passing by? It is not a difficult matter to keep your Windows 7 running fast. There are sveven simple and easy ways below to keep your windows 7 in good performance.

    1. Boost up Windows 7 Boot Time
Windows7 users must have had significant experience that Windows 7 starts up much faster than Vista indeed, but don't you want it to run faster? Only one single processor is set up in default to start the system for Microsoft Windows 7, but a lot of users have been using multi-core processors computers because startup speed can be enhanced immediately by increasing the number of cores used to startup. It is very simple and only needs a bit of modifications of system settings.

First, Open "start" menu, type "msconfig" in the search programs prompt, open system configuration window, find "Boot" option.

Click "Advanced Options", the settings items that we are going to modify can be seen.
Check the "number of processors" and the "maximum memory", adjuste the number of processor to 2, your computer's may be higher (the number of processors is usually 2,4,8).
At the same time enlarge memory, and then click "OK". Restart the computer to check whether the system start-up is sped up or not. If you want to know exactly how much time that has been saved, you can record the previous startup time and make a contraction.

Another way is to delete unwanted system startup progrrams to boost up Windows 7 boot time by using ActivePcOptimizer Startup Manager.

    1) Click Tools and choose Startup Manager
    2) Disable the programs that you don't want them to start with the system bootup

Now restart your computer and you will find that the startup time is shorter than before.

    2. Speed up Windows 7 Shutdown Time
How to speed up Windows 7 boot up has been taught above. Vice versa, shutdown also can be sped up. Although Windows7 shutdown has been much faster than the previous system, Windows XP and Vista, but you will find it shuts down more quickly with a slight change of the registry.

Click "Start" menu, type "regedit" at the search box to open Registry Editor
Then find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control", open the item and the "WaitToKillServiceTimeOut" can be found. Right-click modify and the default values is 12000 (which means 12 seconds) where the value can be changed to be lower, for example 5 seconds or 7 seconds.

Of course, if you are afraid that these fonts may be used in the future, you can save them to another folder in anoter disk instead of deleting them.

Besides your Windows registry would contain some missing font files that will make your computer run slow. Removing these files helps speed up your PC. We recommend that you use some registry cleaner products to do that. Here please see how to removing missing font files from the Windows registry using ActivePcOptimizer.

Then modify this item to decimal value, you can fill a three-digit valuse causally, such as 200,300 because the unit time is milliseconds. After the modification, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to take it to effect. For the users who don't know much about registry must be careful becuase it involves registry modificaiton.

  • 6 ways to Speed up Windows 2000
